empty (isaiah 55:2)

there is a place
where only chips and salsa
seem to reach—the
carbohydrate pit in the deepest
region of my psyche
clamoring to be filled.
cavernous and
perpetually empty, it
echoes with demands for
fresh-baked chocolate-chip
cookies and a tall
glass of milk—
no less than a half-dozen
will do.
badgering
begging
beseeching
besieging
—that which will not be ignored
is craving something more.
granola.
potato chips.
apple pie.
popcorn.
chocolate cake.
chex mix.
hungry for
that which satisfies,
my spirit cries “feed
me!”
and I open my mouth
and fill my
stomach
instead.

Wow, can I relate...you said this so well and so vividly. And you said it for so many of us who do the same thing...

Thanks, Beth! I wish it could have been said without all that I ate before hand... but I suppose that is the price of inspiration, eh?
